Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas Hosts “Boss Up” Entrepreneurship Competition
The Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas young adult team recently partnered with Your Discovery Place Inc. to host the first annual Boss Up entrepreneur competition. Boss Up is a pilot program created to encourage, motivate, and provide opportunities for young adults to earn a viable income through unconventional means. Program participants are encouraged to think outside the box using their talents to improve their standard of living to create wealth as a business owner.
Six aspiring entrepreneurs completed a six-week program with curriculum provided by Your Discovery Place Inc. Each participant created a business plan and received an Entrepreneurial package that included a Chromebook, Student Home Office 365, wireless mouse and USB. The business plans, ranging from an organic personal care product line to a youth empowerment center, were presented to a panel of four judges: Texas State Representative for District 110, The Honorable Toni Rose; Principal of MLH Enterprises, Matt Houston; General Manager at Cedar Crest Golf Course, Ira Molayo; and author and entrepreneur Demetrice Smith.
Faith Alexander (pictured) took home first place for her business plan to develop a Paint and Soul Art Studio in urban communities where individuals experiencing stress can find a new purpose in art. She hopes her studio will expose the community to the benefits and attributes of art. Faith plans to use her knowledge and experience to help aspiring artists learn different mediums. The studio will also serve as a public space for beginners and professionals to work.
