ResCare Workforce Services students and staff from the Luzerne Youth Project’s Young Adult GED program recently attended the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce dinner and awards ceremony. The event, held at the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, honored successful local businesses and community organizations.
Staff mentored and coached the GED students on how to dress professionally for the evening. They also received supportive services to assist them with purchasing business attire. GED student Tiffani Schwab said, “Not only was I able to meet very successful people and learn about their businesses, I also got the opportunity to learn about how well all the services in Pennsylvania are doing.”
The Northeast PA Manufacturers and Employers Council, Inc. provided soft skills training and YES workshops to help the students feel more confident networking with and speaking to professionals from the area. Some of the YES workshops included Professional Impact, Business Etiquette, Communications I and II, Emotional Intelligence, Career Exploration, Generational Diversity and an Introduction to Teams.
“It was nice to see ResCare staff outside of the working environment and to be able to spend time with them in that sense. I had a wonderful time, and I’m grateful for the experience,” said another student. Kailie Walski, a GED student added, “It was motivating to see a lot of successful people come together in one room and receive praise for their hard work.”
