During Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, join Equus as we honor and celebrate the many achievements and contributions of our Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Meet Angeline Chan-Pepper

Project Director

Where are you from?
Malaysia

What does this month-long celebration mean to you?
Honestly, it’s just a big source of pride for me. Given how I was raised by my parents, my values and character are rooted deep in both the Malaysian and Chinese cultures. It’s who I am and who I always will be. In addition, it also means having the opportunity to share and expose our culture to others – whether it be through food, song, dance or history.

What is your favorite cultural tradition?
My favorite tradition has to be where everyone gathers at the table and large amounts of food are prepared and served in a hot pot. We have a saying, “There isn’t a problem that can’t be solved in a hot pot. If one hot pot can’t solve the problem, a second hot pot will!”

What is your proudest career accomplishment to date?
My proudest career accomplishment to date is jumping into the unknown by taking a job in a different discipline on a different continent.

What do you hope to see for the Asian community in the coming years?
The reminder of how important identity and empowerment are for themselves, but more importantly, their children and coming generations. It’s vital to make sure our children have a solid foundation and understand our cultural background, are familiar with inspiring Asian role models and can see themselves in the content of their curriculum as well as the people in our community.
